Our Services

Peer Support

At The Main Place, each of our Peer Support Specialists have a lived experience of severe mental illness and/or substance disorder and use their personal experiences and unique journeys to help others. Peer Support Specialists at The Main Place are trained and certified by the State of Ohio. Each day they offer practical, emotional, social and knowledge-based assistance and support to our peers. Peer Support Specialists are proof that recovery is possible.

Housing Program

At least half of the peers we see at The Main Place are homeless or at risk of losing their home. Our housing specialists know how to help people go from unhoused to a suitable place to live.

The Main Place’s Housing program helps peers with placement, accessing subsidies, and rents apartments owned by The Main Place. These services are available in both the Licking and Knox County centers.

Treatment Services

The Main Place serves adults who experience severe mental illness, also known as SPMI. A confidential mental health assessment is conducted by a licensed social worker and is the starting point for determining if one is eligible for services at The Main Place. The SPMI diagnosis is necessary to qualify for peer support and other treatment services that are paid for by Medicaid and some other forms of insurance.

If an SPMI determination is made, the assessment provider will make treatment recommendations, which normally includes referrals to peer support, case management, and counseling.

Peers with a SPMI diagnosis are eligible for case management services. Case management typically includes the development of an individualized treatment plan built on a list of goals focused on the peer’s strengths. In addition, plans are tailored to meet the unique needs of each person.

The Main Place Residences

The Main Place owns and operates two apartment buildings with one-bedroom apartments. The Place Next Door is a permanent supportive housing facility with 10, one-bedroom apartments located directly behind our Newark drop-in center. This residence includes an on-site housing monitor and a locked front door separating the living area to ensure only authorized guests enter the living area. Our other apartment building has eight, one-bedroom apartments and is secured with locked main entry doors and is monitored by The Main Place staff. Applications are available at each center and submitted applications are reviewed for vacant apartments. The Main Place does not maintain waiting lists for either facility.

Recognizing the critical need for affordable housing in our area, The Main Place is developing a plan to construct additional permanent supportive housing in both Licking and Knox Counties. The estimated timeframe for completion of these projects is within the next two to three years. The plan would add 45 one-bedroom units in Licking County and 15-20 one-bedroom units in Knox County.
